The roots of the Technische Universität Berlin and predecessor institutions date back to the time of Frederick the Great , such as the Königliche Bergakademie zu Berlin (Royal Mining Academy) established in 1770, the Königliche Bauakademie zu Berlin (Royal Building Academy) founded in 1799, and the Königliche Gewerbeakademie zu Berlin (Royal Trade Academy), which opened its doors in 1827.

The research and teaching endeavors can be characterized by a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, ranging from engineering science to natural science, planning science and economics, as well as the humanities and social sciences.

The establishment of important research partnerships in the context of the Excellence Initiative, the German Research Foundation (DFG) and European Institute for Innovation and Technology, in addition to constantly increasing third-party funding for the research projects, demonstrate the dynamic developments in this area. Prestigious science prizes and awards make these successes even more obvious; these include Alexander von Humboldt Chairs, Einstein Chairs, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prizes, and numerous grants from the European Research Council.

The support of early stage researchers is one of the most important tasks of the TU Berlin. The efforts in this field are coordinated by TU-DOC Office. In a first step, they focus their activities mainly on the needs of doctoral candidates both before and during their time at our university. Thus they hope to achieve a better integration of all doctoral researchers - regardless of their status as employees, scholarship holders or external candidates.
