About

History

The foundation of IHS is associated with the Bouwcentrum and the knowledge and experience that emerged from this institution. A new phase began in 1982, under Cor Dijkgraaf, appointed in 1976 when BIE changed its name to the Institute for Housing Studies (IHS).

Education

Training is one of the most effective ways to strengthen capacity and enhance the potential of organisations. Our capacity building services equip current and future global urban professionals with the knowledge and skills to improve urban life. These programmes surpass standard training by ensuring a thorough understanding of the local context and building links for international and local knowledge transfer. Using this method, the interventions made are sustainable for both stakeholders and the local environment.

Research

IHS undertakes specialised international research in partnership with client organisations. This work is focused on advancing urban theories, which is essential for critical thinking development. This research has been instigated and developed for partners including Cities Alliance, the World Bank and UN-Habitat.

In addition to providing the necessary knowledge for advisory work and training activities, academic research also helps identify gaps in capacity within the urban context. IHS publishes this content within working paper series and books on various issues relating to urban studies. The effort also contributes to bridging the gap between research and practice among urban professionals.

Services

Housing services

We are delighted that you have chosen Erasmus University Rotterdam as your (next) place of study and we are looking forward to welcoming you on our campus.

A major part of your preparations for studying abroad is securing safe and affordable accommodation, preferably in the vicinity of the university. In The Netherlands, student housing is not arranged by the university. You need to arrange accommodation yourself. Although Erasmus University Rotterdam has reserved accommodation for about 25% of our yearly incoming international students, most of you will need to secure housing on the private market.

Library services

On the floor, we have a multi-functional area comprised of a library and information centre, working areas for students, with photocopy and scanning facilities. It is also possible to view DVDs, slides, and CD-ROMs. There is a data projector where special exercises and digital training can be performed.

Medical services

EUR offers students the possibility to talk to professional psychologists. If you face study issues and psychological, social and/or emotional problems, you can get the help you need.

The Happy Student Society aims to promote the science of happiness and teach skills that help tackle the most common issues under students: constant time pressure, stress, anxiety, and loneliness.
