History

'A new kind of university… where students could live and learn… and research really mattered' – this was the vision of the first Essex Vice-Chancellor, Sir Albert Sloman. His commitment to research and education remains at the heart of our mission today. In 1964, 122 students arrived on campus for the very first academic year, and in 2024 we celebrated our 60th anniversary.

Education

As a university we are dedicated to excellence in education. We are committed to ‘research-led’ teaching, where every Essex student has direct experience of being a researcher themselves, helping our students develop critical, analytic, and transferable skills.

Across our three faculties of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Health, a range of innovative teaching initiatives encourage our students to broaden their understanding, develop their analytical skills, and boost their professional confidence. There are lots of ways to study at Essex, from traditional lectures and seminars, field trips and lab-based practical sessions to webinars and tutorials in the University's virtual learning environment.

Research

At the University of Essex, we are bold, visionary thinkers tackling global challenges. As a dual-intensive university, our research pushes boundaries across disciplines, shaping policy and driving real change. From human rights in the digital age to food security, we address critical issues, challenge conventions, and influence how people think and behave. We've helped governments model economic policies and shaped the global debate on mental health law reform. With top-rated research centres, we have four subjects in the UK top 10 for research quality (Grade Point Average, Research Excellence Framework 2021). Our interdisciplinary research and commitment to activism make a lasting global impact.

Career

At Essex, we are committed to preparing you for life after graduation, equipping you with the skills and experience to achieve your career goals. Many degrees offer placement years and study abroad options for valuable work experience and global exposure. Most courses include career modules to help you apply academic skills to the workplace, while work-based learning and employer-led projects boost employability. Access CareerHub for job searches, workshops, and advice, and Essex Startups provides support for those wanting to launch their own businesses. You can also gain paid jobs, internships, and log achievements through Chart My Path and The Big Essex Award.

University of Essex (Management & Marketing)

I am currently studying Management and Marketing at the University of Essex, and overall my experience has been positive and engaging, particularly in terms of course content and practical learning. Course (Management & Marketing): The course offers a good balance between management theory and marketing practice. One of the highlights for me was completing a social marketing campaign as part of a module, where we worked on applying marketing concepts to real-world scenarios. This helped develop my teamwork, research, and creative thinking skills, and made the learning feel much more relevant to future careers. The mix of individual assignments and group work prepares you well for professional environments. Teaching quality: Most lecturers are knowledgeable and supportive, and they are generally approachable if you need clarification or extra help. Teaching materials are well organised and available online, which is particularly helpful as a student who does not live on campus. Seminars and workshops are especially useful for discussion and applying lecture content, although teaching styles can vary between modules. Career support: The university provides access to career services, including CV advice, employability workshops, and career guidance appointments. While some opportunities require you to actively seek them out, I have found the support helpful when planning for internships and thinking about future career paths within marketing and management. Student life: Although I dont live on campus, Ive still been able to enjoy student life at Essex. There are lots of societies, events, and social opportunities available, and the campus has a friendly and diverse atmosphere. Commuting can sometimes make spontaneous socialising harder, but there are still plenty of ways to get involved if you make the effort. Pros: Practical modules such as social marketing campaigns that build real-world skills Supportive lecturers and well-organised online resources Diverse student community with a wide range of societies and events Cons: Teaching quality and engagement can vary depending on the module Commuting students may need to plan more to fully engage in campus activities Overall, I would recommend the University of Essex to students looking for a course that combines academic learning with practical marketing experience, especially those who are proactive and willing to make the most of the opportunities available.
