What is a Short Course in Fine Arts?

part of Arts, Design & Architecture

Fine Arts help you express your creativity and imagination through drawing, painting, or sculpture, among many other art forms. Your works exist to be aesthetically pleasing and don’t need to serve a practical purpose. During courses, you will learn about art history and principles that can make your creations stand out.

Some of the classes you can expect to take during a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fine Arts include critical themes in art and design, materials and methods, images and narratives, visual intelligence, figure drawing, studio practice, art writing and criticism, etc.

As a future artist, you will spend most of your time working on art pieces, defining your unique style, and pushing the boundaries of your creativity and abilities. To become a master of your craft, you’ll need to present your work, accept criticism, and practise often.

In addition to advanced knowledge of art theory, history, and criticism, you’ll also need to own communication, presentation, organisation, attention to detail, and self-promotion skills.

A Fine Arts degree opens various career paths. For example, besides being a fine artist you can also work as a printmaker, teacher, illustrator, graphic designer, art gallery manager, etc.

You should know that Fine Arts is a broad discipline that includes branches like Visual, Auditory, Applied, or Performance Arts, among others. Fine Arts and Visual Arts are often used interchangeably.
