During the 5-day Introduction to Interpreting course from Tallinn University, you will learn about the ethical and practical issues of interpreter-mediated communication in the public sector. You will be introduced to different techniques and strategies that are most useful in public interpreting contexts (legal, asylum-seeking and medical settings).

Students will receive instruction for developing the main interpreting skills of active listening, analysing, processing and reformulation and will know the difference between different modes, types and methods of interpreting in public settings.

As well as providing practical knowledge about interpreter-mediated communication, this Introduction to Interpreting course from Tallinn University promotes interlingual and intercultural understanding, autonomous learning, teamwork and problem-solving.

Programme Structure

Programme Structure:

  • Day 1: Course and individual aims. Power in communication. Role boundaries. Ethical dilemmas.
  • Day 2: Interpreting in the public sector. Communication barriers. Modes, types and methods of interpreting in legal and medical settings. Introduction to note-taking in consecutive interpreting. Guiding principles and methods.
  • Day 3: Practice. How to mediate communication precisely and accurately? Active listening skills and content analysis. Memory exercises. Definition of the main roles and settings for the communicative role-play task.
  • Day 4: Interpreter-mediated communication in practice. Ethical dilemmas. Communicative role-play.
  • Day 5: Role-play analysis. Conclusion and lessons learned. Feedback and group reflection.

Lecturers

  • Jekaterina Maadla holds an MA in Conference Interpreting from Tallinn University. During her long career of more than 10 years as a freelance conference interpreter she has worked for the President and the Prime-Minister of Estonia, during the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU and mediated a number of high-level intergovernmental negotiations.
