Overview
In this This Enhanced Surgical Skills for the Surgical First Assistant module at Anglia Ruskin University you’ll be taught using a variety of methods including lectures, group work, case based scenarios, basic surgical skills workshops and simulation based learning.
Features
- Learning and teaching in clinical practice will be under the supervision of a Consultant Surgeon or other established clinician within your own area of clinical practice.
- The practice component will consist of a portfolio of clinical activities, supported by a logbook.
- You’ll be expected to demonstrate progression towards competence and the ability to critically reflect on events from your experiences during the clinical element of the module.

What you will learn:
- simple wound closure of the layers of the skin
- the injection of prescribed local anaesthetic into post-surgical wounds
- the suture fixation of wound drains
- superficial haemostasis – including the application of diathermy

General requirements
- If you wish to be considered for this module, you’ll have successfully completed the Surgical First Assistant module and be regularly working as an SFA.
- Where students have not completed MOD001586 (Surgical First Assistant) they are required to provide evidence of having successfully completed level 6 Surgical First Assistant study plus evidence to demonstrate recent practice in the Surgical First Assistant role.
- Where there has been completion of other recognised SFA learning (example – the AfPP SFA Competency Toolkit) applications must be accompanied by evidence of recent practice in the Surgical First Assistant role.
- You must be able to demonstrate that you have the support of your manager and that there are named individuals willing to support you as your mentor and clinical supervisor.
