About

The Existential Psychotherapy and Literature - The Meeting Points course offered by University of Oxford is not a philosophy course as such: it focuses on some philosophical concepts that have influenced psychotherapy. There will plenty of opportunity to read and discuss works of literature.

Overview

What you will study

Existential psychotherapy moves on from Freud’s concept of mature sexuality as the main determinant of sound mental health and explores the essential challenges of being human in the world. These include awareness of our own mortality and those we love, the need to take responsibility and make choices and the need to find meaning in life.  When these issues seem irresolvable, the individual may experience a crisis and seek therapy. Conversely, when these large themes are embraced and accepted, a sense of resolution and peace can be experienced.

Writers explore these issues in novels, plays and poetry and we will use the course to look at such themes. Because it is a day course the majority of the Existential Psychotherapy and Literature - The Meeting Points course offered by University of Oxford will focus on poetry.
