What you will study
With the release of Deans Knight Income Corp. v. Canada, the Supreme Court has made its most recent foray into the general anti-avoidance rule jurisprudence. In this Deeper into the Knight course offered by York University , experts from the tax bar will unpack how the case came about, what the decision means, and its impact on proposed GAAR amendments and reforms.
Led by Prof. Jinyan Li and John Tobin, co-directors of the LLM in Taxation Law, this essential overview will bring you up to date on the latest major development in Canadian tax law, providing valuable insights along the way.

- Overview of the facts, the case history, and the majority and dissenting opinions with counsel for an intervenor
- The continued impact of Alta Energy in light of Deans Knight
- Determining whether the means chosen by Parliament to give effect to a legislative rationale is exhaustive or illustrative
- Distinguishing between the “purpose” of a provision and its “underlying rationale”
- The case for proposed GAAR amendments after Deans Knight
