The Nurturing a Mindset for Next Level Adjudication course offered by York University draws on learning from other disciplines and gives you the opportunity to hear from experts in other fields about some of the “big ideas” that can help you to do this work better.
Join an expert faculty of experienced adjudicators, award-winning teachers, and experts in diverse fields to explore key elements of cognitive and behavioural science, consider how researchers have investigated its application to judges and adjudicators, and learn best practices.

Programme Structure
The program focuses on:
- The role of intuitive and deliberative thinking, cognitive error, and “noise” in decision-making
- Risks arising from implicit bias, stereotypes, and subtle acts of inclusion and exclusion s
- The importance of non-verbal and para-verbal communication
- Empathy and intention as key adjudicator and mediator skills
- How memories are generated and recalled
- The science of credibility assessment and how to avoid its pitfalls

General requirements
- Graduates of the SOAR/OsgoodePD Certificate in Adjudication;
- Those with two or more years of full-time experience as an adjudicator, OR an equivalent amount of experience as a part-time adjudicator;
- Senior tribunal staff, such as counsel, who work closely with adjudicators and would benefit from advanced training in adjudication.
