What you will learn
By the end of the Skin and Wound Care Basics for Personal Support Workers (PSWs) program offered by York University , you will be able to:
- Develop an understanding of healthy vs impaired skin integrity, particularly in the elderly or medically compromised individual.
- Be able to identify the ‘warning signs” of skin breakdown and strategies to prevent skin breakdown.
- Understand the key dressing types and how/when they should be used/changed.
- Review the importance of documentation and communication with other members of the healthcare team.
- Engage in opportunities to share/learn from others in a safe, respectful environment.
Programme Structure
The program focuses on:
- Overview of Skin function & skin health
- Risk and Prevention of skin breakdown (focus on elderly)
- Dealing with: Skin Tears and Pressure Injury/Ulcers (Bedsores) and other Chronic wounds (diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, etc)
- Types of dressings/use
- Documentation and communication re: skin/wound care
- Self-assessment/wrap up
