Overview
This three-week international Summer School - Athens Ancient Polis programme offered by National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) explores Athens as both an ancient polis and a modern city through lectures, fieldwork, site visits, and research activities. Delivered in English by archaeologists, historians, and urban specialists, the programme examines the city's architectural, cultural, and historical development from antiquity to the present day. Participants complete 150 hours of guided instruction and field-based learning worth 5 ECTS credits.
Key Facts
Students engage with key themes including architecture, democracy, funerary practices, heritage management, and urban identity while visiting major sites and museums in Athens. Each participant undertakes an individual or team research project focused on topics such as public space transformation, monument reinterpretation, heritage preservation, or urban identity. The programme concludes with project presentations, academic discussion, and the award of an official transcript and certificate of attendance.
