The idea of establishing a University in Greece emerged alongside with the Greek War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution. The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens officially founded on April 14th, 1837, is the first University not only of Greece but both the Balkan peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean region.
Research at the University of Athens includes almost all research interests. Such research in the university is associated with that conducted by the hospitals and research institutes of the metropolitan area, including the National Research Center for Physical Sciences Demokritos, the National Research Foundation (EIE), the National Observatory of Athens, the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, the Alexander Fleming Biomedical Sciences Research Center, the Athens High Performance Computing Laboratory, the National Centre for Marine Research (NCMR) and the Foundation for Biomedical Research of the Academy of Athens (BRFAA).
Student Counselling has been an internationally acknowledged institution for decades intrinsically connected with the overall function of Universities. Student counselling is practised in special centres, the Counselling Centres for Students.
The Library Directorate was legislated in October, 1998, while in October 2005 a Unified Central Library was founded as an independent and decentralized Directorate Unit, under the name of "Library and Information Center (LIC)" of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). Its line of work comprises the functional coordination of the University's Libraries.
The Computing Centre is the unit of the Institution that is equipped with computer systems for covering computing needs of the Institution’s personnel.
It provides the appropriate material and software for the special computing needs of the users.
