Midwifery is a healthcare profession focused on providing care to women during pregnancy, labour, childbirth, and the postpartum period, as well as caring for newborns. A midwife plays an important role in promoting safe motherhood, preventing complications, providing health education, and supporting women and their families. During pregnancy, the midwife provides antenatal care, monitors the health of the mother and fetus, identifies danger signs, and prepares the woman for childbirth. During labour, the midwife monitors maternal and fetal wellbeing, supports normal vaginal delivery, and promptly identifies and manages complications such as postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia, obstructed labour, and fetal distress. After delivery, the midwife provides postpartum care, promotes early breastfeeding, monitors the mother for complications, and provides essential newborn care. Midwives also provide family planning, reproductive health education, counselling, and community health services. In conclusion, midwifery is an essential profession that contributes greatly to the health and survival of mothers and newborns through skilled, respectful, and evidence-based care.
