The College of Bytown was founded in 1848 by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate as a bilingual Catholic college; from its very beginnings, students studied in both English and French. In 1866, the recently renamed College of Ottawa was elevated to university status by royal charter, and in 1889, it secured a pontifical charter.

Engaging Academics and Valuable Co-op Experiences
Studying Political Science at the University of Ottawa has been an incredible experience, largely thanks to the fantastic co-op opportunities and the exceptional faculty here. The co-op program at uOttawa is a standout feature, offering hands-on, practical experiences that are tightly integrated with our academic studies. This blend of learning and working in real-world settings has significantly enriched my understanding of political science, making the theoretical aspects much more tangible and applicable. One of the highlights of my academic journey has been learning from Professor Stuart Chambers, who teaches Introduction to Social Sciences (SCS1150). Professor Chambers is not only deeply knowledgeable but also brings an infectious enthusiasm to his classes. He encourages us to think critically and engage actively with the material, which has made his courses both enlightening and enjoyable. Campus life at uOttawa is also very engaging, filled with a variety of events and activities that make it easy to connect with others and find your community.
