The University of Hull was founded in 1927, originally as University College Hull. The foundation stone was laid the following year by the Duke of York (later King George VI).

Our motto, Lampada Ferens, translates as ‘carrying the light of learning’. As England’s 14th oldest university, we’ve shared that light with thousands of people from across the world.

A degree from Hull is a hallmark of quality. Join an inclusive, empowering community with choices in diverse subjects, including reputable programmes at Hull University Business School and Hull York Medical School, a collaboration with the University of York. Our Inclusive Education Framework ensures anyone can thrive.

At Hull, you have a variety of options. Whether you want to combine two or more subjects, study abroad, or gain hands-on experience as part of your degree, you will find plenty of options here.

At Hull, we never stand still. We look back on our past with pride, but we are moving forwards, exploring new and better ways to live today for the benefit of humanity’s future.

We’re helping to shape a fairer, brighter, carbon-neutral future for all. From climate change to social justice, our academics are tackling the big challenges facing humanity. So everything you learn prepares you for taking on the complex challenges of tomorrow.

Hull is featured twice in Universities UK's list of '100 discoveries by British Universities which changed the world' with our bone density scanner and the globally-renowned creation of LCD technology. Today, we’re in the top 50 UK universities for research impact (REF 2021).

We don’t just exist to teach. We are here to prepare you for life after university. Our degree programmes and extra-curricular opportunities offer a wealth of opportunities to enhance your CV, whether that’s studying abroad, a rewarding work placement, undertaking an internship, or a volunteering role.

Our students also have access to careers experts in Student Futures, who offer tailored support and guidance to help you achieve your careers aspirations. This service is also available to our alumni after graduation.
